Iwan Thomas MBE

Run Rampage 16/01/11, Bagshot,

Place: 20th (50mins 22secs)

Iwan is without doubt one of the finest 400m runners that Britain has ever seen. A former European Champion, Commonwealth Champion, World Cup winner and current British Record Holder. A late starter to the world of Athletics, preferring to concentrate on BMX bike riding (ranked fourth in Europe) than to run one lap of the track. However he did start his athletics career in 1992 when he represented the British 4x400m relay team at the World Junior Championships, helping them to 5th place.

In 1993 Iwan attended a 3 year course at West London University studying for a Sports Management degree, where he juggled his studies and training, making excellent progress every year setting 9 Welsh 400m records in the process. In 1994 Iwan went to the Commonwealth Games in Canada where he set another PB and Welsh Record in 45.98 and reached the semi final stage.

Iwan was rewarded for his superb form and was picked to represent the British 4x400m relay team in 1995 at the European Cup which they won. His confidence grew from strength to strength and he was awarded an individual position in the Olympic team for Atlanta. At the age of 22 Iwan had a fantastic games, he came 5th in the final of the 400m and won a silver medal in the 4x400m.

In 1997 Iwan, keen to capitalise on his achievements of the previous year, claimed his first UK Championship title in Birmingham beating Olympic silver medallist Roger Black and setting a new British record. He then went on to win the European Cup 4x400m relay; he came sixth in the World Championships in Athens and won silver in the 4x400m relay. 1998 was a year to remember for Iwan. He launched himself into the season with a number of Grand Prix victories; this was followed by victories in the European Cup and in the 4x400m relay. Iwan then went on to the European Championships in Budapest winning Gold in the 400m and in the 4x400m.

Success at the World Cup in South Africa later in the year was particularly satisfying representing Europe against the other continents of the World. In what must have seemed an endless year, Iwan flew straight to the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur where he became champion of the Commonwealth and bought a bronze medal home for Wales in the 4x400m.

After several years of injuries Iwan battled to a Silver Medal in the Commonwealth Games in 2002.

Charlotte Cooper from...

It's been a long adventure for The Subways since the Welwyn Garden City trio emerged fresh-faced and exuberant with their 2005 debut album 'Young For Eternity'. With their teenage days still relatively recently behind them, the band have already experienced more than most bands endure in an entire career!

The good times were endless. On the live circuit, The Subways earned praise from all corners and then subsequently guest slots to Oasis, ACDC, The Foo Fighters and an incredible US tour with Taking Back Sunday. Five consecutive years at the Reading/ Leeds festivals along with appearances at Glastonbury and T in the Park cemented their reputation as festival favourites. They then hit the international circuit with particularly memorable dates in Germany, Japan, America and Australia, while back home, the venues seemed to get larger with every tour with almost every date sold-out in advance. Media praise came from all corners and they become a regular figure on Stateside television with appearances on the likes of Conan O'Brien and David Letterman.

In amidst such a phenomenal rise laid darker problems. Vocalist / guitarist Billy Lunn was forced to undergo surgery to cure nodules on his vocals chords in 2007, caused by strenuous touring. Suddenly the band's very existence was in doubt.

"I was told that if there was any trouble with the recovery, it wasn't that I wouldn't sing again, I might not be able to speak again," he says solemnly.

"There was a lot of fear. But even when I couldn't speak, we went into a rehearsal room and the frustrations came out in all the songs we made in that period."

When Lunn eventually made a full recovery, The Subways were re-energised. The combination of frustration and fresh influences from the likes of Refused, Death Cab For Cutie, Mclusky and Shellac provoked the vehement dynamics that are infused in the new album's most vitriolic moments.

The band opted to head to Los Angeles to record the album with producer extraordinaire Butch Vig (Nirvana,Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth).

Vig proved to be a powerful influence on the band....

"I really wore my heart on my sleeve. All the trials and tribulations that we've been through, they're there. I haven't left anything to myself." recalls BIlly.

The result is that the bands second album 'All Or Nothing' recalls the exuberance of 'Young For Eternity' while embarking up an adventurous sonic progression.

Still only in their early twenties Billy, Charlotte and Josh are currently writing and preparing to record their 3rd studio album, due late 2010/ early 2011.

With much of 2010 to be taken up with rehearsal room lock ins and led by the band's ferocious appetite for playing live they are announcing some very select UK and European festival dates for the summer of 2010.

The best UK rock album of the year - NME (8/10)

Strong on melody and big on volume the material here would work whether it were played on an acoustic guitar at sunset on Primrose Hill or through an amplifier the height of a prison wall at Donington Park......far to good for the band who created it to be taken for granted - KERRANG KKKK

Buoyed with emotional heft and supernova guitar riffs, their second album is wired around a maturing song craft. That's not to say it's all bluster and no substance, The recent split of singer guitarist Billy Lunn and bassist Charlotte Cooper has made for some inspirational writing - MOJO 4 * * * *

The Subways have created a cracking album here, producing the goods when under immense pressure, and rising like a phoenix from the flames. Passion sears through every track, and hopefully it'll propel them to the top - at last - ROCKSOUND (8) - Album of the month

Jammed to the ridiculous with memorable, meaty, yet intelligently crafted numbers. It's almost impossible to find fault with this album which throws down the gauntlet to the rest of the struggling pack of sophomores - DISORDER MAGAZINE - (9)
